Can My Accountant Do My Self-Assessment?
To many sole traders, tax regulations can seem much more complex than they actually are. While tax records do require careful calculation and precision in record taking, the rest is simply a matter of having the time to work through what is needed. Of course, the more experience you have, the less time is needed – so it can be very tempting to have your accountant do your self-assessment.

Why Have Your Accountant Do Your Self-Assessment?
If you lack the time or aren’t confident that you fully understand all the regulations which will apply in your case, you might want to have an accountant fill in and file your self-assessment tax return. In fact, this is one of the government’s own suggestions.
There are a number of different tax sources you may not have been aware of. As well as income directly from your business, you may have additional income from renting property, or you may have sold certain things which qualify for capital gains tax. Interest on savings can also be affected by tax.
You may also qualify for the High Income Child Benefit Charge if your individual income is over £60,000 and you or your partner get child benefit (or if someone else receives child benefit for a child who lives with you, where they contribute at least an equal amount toward the child’s upkeep).
As well as additional sources of tax, as a self-employed individuals you will be able to claim certain expenses, including but not limited to:
- Business travel costs
- Office costs including stationery and phone bills
- Staff costs (if any)
- Financial costs including insurance and bank charges
- Cost of stock or raw materials
- Training courses taken for the purpose of your business
- Marketing expenses including website costs
In all cases, there are further limitations on what can be expensed and how.

What Will Your Accountant Need for Your Self-Assessment?
While an accountant will be able to complete tax returns faster, the most important thing you can provide us with is still time. Happily, if we’re also providing accountancy services to your business, we’ll already have much of what we need through the ongoing production of management accounts.
In terms of the actual information we need, first and foremost we’ll need to know about what income you’ve drawn from your business, how you’ve done so, and whatever tax may already have been paid. Also relevant here are any benefits in kind you may receive (company car, etc).
Pension scheme information should also be provided at this time.
If you have any investments providing income, we will also need documentation of these. This documentation can vary according to type, so we encourage clients to work with us to ensure everything that’s relevant comes up and the documentation and be found and provided in a timely fashion so we can remain compliant.
Any major capital transactions should also be documented here.
To get started with your tax calculations, why not get in touch? We’ll be happy to book a detailed discussion in.
